Situated among the sweeping, rolling, emerald hills of Exmoor, Dunster is a fantastic destination for your next holiday in Somerset. Due to its location, it is ideal for exploring the countryside, or for heading to the coast for a brisk coastal walk or a day out at the beach. With so much to offer, Dunster holidays are perfect for everyone whether you’re looking for a family holiday, a group getaway with friends, or somewhere special for two. Dunster is the birth-place of the song ‘All things bright and beautiful’ inspired by the town’s stunning and privileged location in the countryside.
In the town, you will be treated to a good and wide selection of pubs, restaurants, and tea rooms where you will be able to sample the best of the local produce. Each offers a different dining experience perfect for the different times of the day, and year. The hearty meals that are available at a traditional country pub will warm you during the winter months, but in the summer, head to a local tea room for a nice brew and large slice of homemade cake. Similarly, the town is home to a wealth of local arts and crafts shops, as well as other little gift shops and the town prides itself on the quality of the products that are available here.
In the town you will find an abundance of historic buildings, Dunster is home to over 200 listed buildings and buildings of historical significance. Arguably the best renowned of these is Dunster Castle, which sits high above the town and was originally fortified during the Saxon times. However, the current look of the castle as a manor house was not designed until the seventeenth century, which is how it remains until this day. Now owned by The National Trust, the castle is home to the National Plant Collection of Strawberry Trees! A great place to visit for both the horticulture and the architecture, Dunster castle proves a top day out for anyone in the area.
A great event that takes place in the town is the Dunster by Candlelight festival which takes place every year on the first Friday and Saturday in December. During the event, the town turns off the street lights and the town basks in dancing candlelight after the Lantern Lighting Procession.
During your Dunster holiday, you are well positioned to go for walks or bike rides on Exmoor National Park, as well as being able to explore the coast and you are even close enough to explore the popular beaches on North Devon such as Woolacombe which is a little over an hour away.
