Dog-friendly beaches in Somerset

Simon L 26 June 2018

So you've found your perfect dog-friendly holiday in Somerset. But most likely your beloved pet will need somewhere to let loose, run, jump, sniff and swim. With that in mind, here's our list of the best dog-friendly beaches in Somerset:

Minehead Beach

Minehead beach

Minehead is one of the most popular seaside resorts throughout the whole of Somerset. The beach is a long sandy expanse with a harbour at one end and while dogs are not allowed on the main part of the beach (from the harbour to the golf course) all year round, there are areas where dogs are welcome all year round. The restrictions on the main beach are from 1st May to 30th September.

Minehead is definitely a bucket and spade kind of beach, you and your dog can have fun digging holes and swimming in the waves. There are also plenty of shops and cafes close by to pick up a portion of hot chips or an ice cream.

Watchet Beach

Watchet beach

This little-pebbled beach is perfect for stick chasing and a spot of doggy paddling. While the beach is only small, the town has a selection of good shops and cafés nearby. Dogs may not be as welcome in the cafes, so why not get a cream tea to go and enjoy in on the beach?

With pleasant walks in every direction and a lovely little village to explore, this beach is perfect for a quiet day out, you won't need a bucket and spade but you can spend the day rockpooling and hunting for the perfect stick for your dog to fetch!

Porlock Weir

Porlock Weir

Porlock Weir is a delightful little shingle and pebble beach with a working harbour. Access to the beach is down a lane from the charming hamlet of Porlock. From the Tourist Information Centre head down to Porlock Weir (about a 5-minute drive).

There are absolutely no dog restrictions on this beach so you can stay and play all day. The village is home to some lovely shops, cafes, The Ship Inn pub, and the award-winning Andrew's On The Weir restaurant.

Brean Beach

Brean beach

Another great dog-friendly beach in Somerset, Brean Beach allows access for dogs all year round and pooches will love burning off some energy along the three-mile stretch of sandy shore. During the summer months, fast food and ice cream vendors can be found in the car park.

Be careful when the tide is out however as there is an area of soft sand and mud near the water’s edge that becomes exposed and can be dangerous. Stay safe and explore the area a few hours either side of high tide.

Berrow Beach

Berrow beach

The second longest stretch of sand in Europe, Berrow Beach is perfect for exploring and has plenty of open space, perfect for a game of catch with your furry friend or dipping your toes or paws! Like Brean Beach, Berrow Beach carries the same safety warnings about exposed soft sand and mud, as it is part of the same stretch of sand.

You’ll also find a famous shipwreck and sand dunes at Berrow Beach, great for a game of hide and seek. Dogs are welcome all year round.
