Chard is a town of superlatives as it is the most southern town in Somerset and also the highest town in Somerset with a fine example of a hill fort to explore. Chard is an ancient Roman town and also has a number of Roman villas in the local area that you can go and explore. There are also some beautifully attractive buildings in Chard, The Elizabethan Guildhall which houses the tourist information centre is worth a visit and the museum at Godworthy House is a lovely spot and houses some interesting exhibits. It’s also the home to a display of items about John Stringfellow, the inventor of powered flight, who came up with his ground breaking invention while in Somerset.

The town has its own reservoir, which is a local nature reserve and perfect for walking dogs, so why not bring your four legged friend on holiday in Chard? Many of the town’s pubs and restaurants are dog friendly too, so reward yourself with a hearty meal following a long stroll in the countryside. Chard is also home to Snowdon Hill Quarry, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Near to Chard there are some other brilliant places to visit, with local attractions including Chard Reservoir Nature Reserve and Hornsbury Mill which has a working water wheel and a landscaped water garden. For adventurous days out you might enjoy the nearby safari park of Longleat Estate or, Cricket St Thomas Park, great for those on holiday with the whole family. There is also the Ferne Animal Sanctuary nearby for those that enjoy both beautiful countryside and small furry or feathered creatures.

Why not combine your stay in Chard with the annual carnival, which has been running for more than 47 years to raise money for local charities such as the Chard Christmas Lights. Chard also boasts its own town crier, who often makes appearances during events held in the town and is just one of the many things that makes Chard such a lovely holiday destination.
