This area is popular with walkers and nature lovers with Exmoor National Park being right on your doorstep, thereby making the cottage popular with couples wanting to get away from it all, especially out of season. Set around the yard of the owner’s small farm it is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet. From the top gate of the farm, guests can walk up to the summit of Dunkery Beacon, where the views are far-reaching. The local village of Wheddon Cross is a short distance away and has a well-stocked local shop and pub. Other points of interest include the medieval town of Dunster with its famous 'Dunster by Candlelight Festival' held at the beginning of December, Valley of the Rocks, Lynton and Lynmouth and the West Somerset Steam Railway.

On entering this cottage, you will go straight into the lounge/kitchen/diner which is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet this location boasts. In the lounge area, you can enjoy curling up with your favourite book in front of the wood burner, or take time to watch the TV/DVD. The lounge and kitchen areas are divided by a breakfast bar which is perfect for breakfast and light suppers. The kitchen is well-equipped with electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge with ice compartment. There is also a small cloakroom which is perfect for hanging coats and storing muddy boots after a long countryside walk. Heading upstairs you will find one super-king room (which can be made up as a twin on request). The shower room is also on this floor and has a shower and WC. Regret no children under the age of 16.

Venturing outside through the cloakroom you will find an enclosed decked area with seating, here you can enjoy the warm Somerset evenings and the open views down the valley. Proceed down nine steps to the small private garden where you can relax and enjoy a spot of outside dining. With dogs in mind there is also a useful dog kennel and run located below the decking steps.

The cottage was fantastic. I loved it. It was amazing to hear the birds but Dudley wasn't sure about the Lambs. Sorry for the barking. Personally I would come back in a couple of years. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Swallows Next is in a really lovely location, ideally situated for great walks. The cottage was spotless, clean and tidy. The cottage is part of a wider working farm complex situated at the bottom of a very steep slope with a sharp bend that gives the impression you are going over a cliff edge. My partner refused to drive to/from the main farm enRead moretrance. The cottage really did have everything we needed, from cooking basics to extra blankets, although my partner is allergic to wool so we couldnt use them. There was no stairguard that the instructions said was provided so we had to improvise and use the log burner guard. Due to very bad weather, we saw little of the night sky which was one of the reasons why we chose this cottage in the first place as well as the remoteness. We were not aware that due to the location, there was zero phone signal which is what to expect in this area but it would have been good to have this listed on the advertised websites. We have always had a welcome from previous hosts but this was not evident so when we needed to contact the host, we had to go knocking on the main farmhouse for help. The instruction booklet is fairly comprehensive but some leaflets of the local attractions would not have gone amiss. We picked some up on our travels instead. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and modern. There was no welcome pack so am glad we brought a few of our own bits (tea, coffee, milk, eggs, biscuits). All previous cottages we have stayed at, this has always been provided. My partner has been suffering from a bad back recently and struggled with the softness of the mattress where I was fine. We loved the warm and cozy upstairs. The bathroom was well laid out and modern but we found the shower units settings difficult to get right. The water (low, eco, high) went from cold, to luke warm to scalding hot. The water power seemed a little limp compared to previous experiences. The bath towels were a little small to be honest The garden was thoughtfully laid out for the dog although we decided not put our pooch in the kennel provided which looked as though it had not been used for a while. We did not need to use the facilities in the barn so we cannot comment on this. The local pub at Wheddon Cross was really lovely and welcoming. The food portions were very large, reasonably priced and lovely and fresh. Wonderfully quiet and peaceful with Dunkery Beacon just down the road. Lots of bird life which was great. We loved watching the lambs. The local village shop and petrol station (very expensive!) was ok but we found the fresh produce extremely lacking indeed. The tea room at Allerford is just the most amazing place. The scones are absolutely to die for. The little tea room at Selworth is also worth a visit. Both are extremely small and in bad weather (which we experienced) the seating areas were a bit of a squeeze. We found the 6G wi-fi absolutely brilliant. We would not hesitate to stay here again if the shower temp and power, bigger towels and the downstairs radiator worked better. Maybe a bigger TV so we could watch from kitchen table when eating instead of squinting. Hide

Swallow's Nest is beautifully situated in the most gorgeous valley. It is well placed to get to all the best walks and I was delighted to get to the top of the Dunkery Beacon 6 months after total knee replacement surgery! The owner's gorgeous collies were very friendly too.
