Taunton can be found sitting on the edge of the River Tone, between the Quantock, Blackdown, and Brendon Hills, in an area known as the Vale of Taunton. The county capital of Somerset, it’s a delightful town with a great mix of shops, restaurants and bars. The town has a great mix of old and new architecture, and, due to its central location, is the perfect base from which to explore all of Somerset’s wonders.

An architectural spectacle

There are some excellent examples of religious architecture in the town with the church of St Mary Magdalene and St James dominating the skyline of the town. Taunton Castle is also quite the spectacle. Dating back to the 12th century, it is now a Grade 1 Listed Scheduled Ancient Monument and houses the Museum of Somerset. A number of public parks dotted throughout the town are a great place to relax and unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of Somerset.

If you’re looking for something fun to just sit back and watch, there’s much to take advantage of. Somerset County Cricket Club play their home games in the town, so you may wish to take in a game at the ground or tour the cricket museum, while it’s also the home of the Blackdown monthly markets, Summer Westival, Taunton flower show and carnival.
