The Quantock Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty situated in the west of Bridgwater in Somerset and are made up of heathland, parkland and woodland that meet the coast. Living in the hills are many varieties of wildlife such as red deer and buzzards and Bridgwater Bay contains stretches of Jurassic rock that is perfect for fossil hunting.

When on a Quantock Hills holiday you must get out and enjoy the wonderful array of footpaths that are either in or pass through the area. Coleridge Way is named after poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and passes through the Quantocks before finishing in Porlock on Exmoor. The Quantock Greenway is a figure of eight route that is 37 miles in length and centres around the village of Crowcombe, while the Macmillan Way West follows the Quantocks ridge on the route that runs from Barnstaple in Devon to Castle Cary.

From exciting beaches for the family to explore to heathlands packed with wildlife and unusual flora and fauna there is no shortage of outdoor fun to be had. The heathlands are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest and are fascinating to discover, making for a special Somerset holiday.

Fyne Court is a true hidden gem amongst the Quantock Hills with the National Trust property providing insight into former resident Andrew Crosse’s life, who was known as ‘The Thunder and Lightning Man’. Children will enjoy the vast gardens where they can climb the trees, build a den or play a game in the courtyard.

Enjoy a ride on the West Somerset Railway during a holiday in the Quantock Hills which passes by the edge of the hills. Jump aboard at Bishops Lydeard and head to the harbour town of Watchet. You’ll also find the Somerset and Dorset Railway Museum in the town with a great collection of steam locomotives that have been maintained to the highest level along with other memorabilia from the railway’s past. Back on the West Somerset Railway you can head to many other fantastic towns across Somerset including; Minehead, Dunster, Williton and Doniford Halt.

Major settlements nearby to the Quantock Hills are Bridgwater and Taunton. Time your visit to the area with the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival and you’ll be treated to a spectacular display of colour in one of the most popular carnivals in the whole of the country.
