Bridgwater is a market town and civil parish near the northern coast of Somerset; it is well connected to other areas and easy to reach for your next holiday in Somerset. The town is situated on the edge of the Somerset Levels, in a level and well-wooded country, with the Mendip range to the north and the Quantock hills to the west. The town lies along both sides of the River Parrett which has been a major port and trading centre and maintains a large industrial base. It is linked to Taunton by the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal.

In the town itself, you will find awe-inspiring Georgian architecture and well as other historical structures that date back to medieval times. As you stroll through the ancient streets, you will be greeted by the sight of corner cafes, independent shops, and other areas of interest. Within the town, head to the Cornhill Market where you will be able sample and buy some local wares as a reminder of your holiday.

For families, there are a wide range of attractions near to the town that are easy to visit while you’re staying in the area. For adrenaline junkies and those with nerves of steel, head to the Cannington activity centre or for something that is a little more leisurely, then Hestercombe House and Gardens and Cannington Walled Gardens will be a great days out for you.

The town is famed for the well renowned Bridgwater Carnival event that takes place annually at the beginning of November. The event is said to be the largest procession of illuminated vehicles and performers in the world and has taken place in the town since around the time of the gunpowder plot in 1605.

As Bridgwater is located relatively close to the coast, it is possible to venture there and enjoy a traditional seaside day out with the family. Nearby Burnham on Sea is the ideal location for a bucket and spade day out, with many traditional features. Further along the coast is the Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve where visitors will be able to spot wildlife and explore this important area that has also been designated as a Special Area of Conservation.

The surrounding coastal and rural areas of Bridgwater are great for being able to get out and about, especially with man’s best friend because your dog deserves a holiday too. Find coastal walks that offer breath-taking views, enjoy a run around on the beach but be sure to check restrictions, or head inland for walks that take in the lush, green scenes of Somerset.
