Taunton can be found sitting on the edge of the River Tone, between the Quantock, Blackdown, and Brendon Hills in an area known as the Vale of Taunton. The county capital of Somerset, it is a delightful town with a great mix of large shops, leisure facilities as well as restaurants and bars. The town has busy high street with a great mix of the old and the new that is perfect for shopping and the ideal base for your next holiday in Somerset.

There are some excellent examples of religious architecture in the town with the church of St Mary Magdalene and St James dominating the sky line of the town. A number of public parks dotted throughout the town are a great place to relax and unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of Somerset. Similarly, in the south of the town you will find the South Taunton streams which are an area of urban wetlands, and in the north of the town is the Children’s Wood Riverside Reserve which provides a movement corridor for various animals along the banks of the River Tone.

Taunton is the home of Somerset County Cricket Club, so you may wish to take in a game at the ground or tour the cricket museum whilst enjoying the summer in Somerset. Taunton is also the home of the Blackdown monthly markets, Summer Westival, Taunton flower show and carnival.

Somerset is typically renowned as being the home of cider there are a number of great places that you can buy this fruity tipple. Sheppy’s Cider Museum is a great day out for all the family where you can learn about how cider is made and taste some of the finest in the West Country. The county is known for a high standard of food with many renowned chefs hailing from the town, including the likes of Gary Rhodes and Phil Vickery.

Due to its central location, a break in Taunton means that you will be perfectly placed to experience much of what the county has to offer. To the north west of the town, Exmoor National Park is within reach and well worth a visit during your stay in Somerset, especially to experience the different landscapes and breath-taking views. To the north, head to the coast, and look out across the Bristol Channel and into Wales, perfect for watching the setting sun. In the north East is the lively town of Bridgwater where there is always something going on as well as the Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve which is great for a dog friendly break in Taunton. If you’re up for exploring a little further afield during your stay in Taunton, it is possible to reach the surrounding counties of Devon and Dorset from Taunton.
