The smallest city in England with only 12,000 people populating its small streets, Wells is a hidden gem in the north of Somerset. With the feel of being transported back in time, the streets of the city are seeping history throughout; you could be forgiven for believing you are much deeper into the countryside than you truly are.

The city gets its name from three wells which are dedicated to St Andrew, two of which are in the cathedral grounds and one which can be seen in the market place. The cathedral here, which gives Wells its status as a city, is a fantastic example of architecture that dates all the way back to the start of building works in the eighth century. The cathedral has been described as the ‘most poetic of English cathedrals’ and it is easy to see why people fall in love with the setting here as soon as they arrive. The striking beauty of such a grand building amongst the small and quiet backdrop of such quaint streets means that Wells is one of the most romantic places in the whole of the West Country.

However, the city of Wells is not just all about the amazing cathedral. The city itself has a number of wonderful craft shops and examples of local traditions that you can enjoy and take in on a quiet stroll. There are also a variety of markets that take place in the city, as well as charming narrow streets that demonstrate the heritage of this medieval city. You may even recognise Wells as the village of Sandford, as it was the location for parts of the film Hot Fuzz, which was filmed in 2006. Whilst here, take a visit to the Bishop’s Palace, one of the city’s hidden gems where you can walk across a drawbridge, discover the beautiful gardens and enjoy an afternoon tea in the pretty setting.

Lying at the foot of the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels, you’ll be surrounding by beautiful countryside during a holiday in Wells. Perfect for those that like to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, whether that’s on foot, by bike or simply relaxing with a picnic. Wells is actually home to the Mendip Hills museum, so if you wanted to find out more about this stunning area then this is the place to go! Also, the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath is less than an hour’s drive away and is a great day out for either lovers of heritage or those that enjoy a spot of retail therapy.
